Filing Your Income Taxes

Get the benefits and credits you may be entitled to.

Why should I file my taxes?

Even if you have little or no income, you should still file your taxes. If you are a person with a disability, filing a tax return can help you save money, pay less in taxes, and get different benefits, credits, and financial supports.

If you file your taxes, you might be able to get:

  • The Disability Tax Credit (DTC)

  • The Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP)

  • Canada Caregiver Credit

  • Home Accessibility Tax Credit

  • Medical Expense Tax Credit

If you’d like to see what other benefits you might be able to get, check out Prosper Canada’s Benefits Wayfinder Tool or the Government of Canada’s Benefits Finder Tool.

When is tax season?

You need to file your taxes every year by April 30.

If you or your spouse/common-law partner is self-employed, the deadline is June 15, but you still need to pay any taxes you owe by April 30.

What if I didn’t file taxes in the past?

You can still file your taxes for past years.

This might help you get back payments for things like the Disability Tax Credit (DTC), or the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB).

Need Help?

It can be overwhelming to file your taxes – but you don’t have to do it alone.

Here are some ways to get help:

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)

You may be able to get your taxes done by a volunteer for free. The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is a partnership between the CRA and community organizations and their volunteers.

Through this program, community organizations host tax clinics where volunteers file tax returns for free for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation. To learn more, click here.
